Collection consists primarily of folk songs and song fragments. It contains approximately 4,000 song texts, 2,250 of which were privately collected and 1,700 of which were transcribed from published sources. The collection contains bound volumes of songs, ballads and lore, and classed single songs, such as camp songs, soldier songs, early American minstrel, Negro and white spirituals, murder ballads, sea songs, Irish ballads and songs, cowboy songs, child ballads, and songs of war. The collection also contains letters, bills, accounts, and other documents for Gordon's role in the George v. Victor suit concerning the song "The Old 97." Also included are materials relating to three separate works by others: Roll and go by Joanna Colcord; Songs of the dogwatch by Joseph McGinnis; and Songs my mother sang by Mary Newcomb.

Robert Winslow Gordon, born September 2, 1888 in Bangor, Maine, was one of the first and foremost authorities on American folksong. He studied and later taught at Harvard University; while teaching there he began research on folk poetry and song. In 1918 he accepted a position in the English Department at the University of California at Berkeley.
